How to hold your own in the weights area - in collaboration with V3Apparel
I know how hard it is being a girl stepping foot into the weights area for the first time. it’s intimidating to say the least...
As you know i am a V3Apparel Athlete, the reason i love working with these guys is their mantra ‘motivational clothing for the everyday athlete.’ key being everyday athlete - they recognises those, like myself in the fitness community that workout because they love it, because they want to lose weight, because they want to better themselves. It applies to those at the beginning or middle of their journey. They recognise that healthy looks different on everyone!
I was fortunate that my older brother showed me some weight techniques in our home gym before i ventured into the weights area myself. But I remember that first day i stepped in the weights area on my own. I was so paranoid that people were looking at me or that i was doing something wrong; wrong form etc i didn’t even work out that well the anxiety consumed me, so i ran off to the comfort of the treadmill.
Now... i’m not afraid to enter the weights area and on a usual day i’m the only girl in that area, lifting weights as big as the boys there. 💪🏻😝
So i wanted to share my tips how i got over that anxiety of being in the weights room for any first timers!
Plan your workouts
Being prepared is key. How many of you have gone to the gym and spent most of the time wandering endlessly around looking at what equipment to use, what to train etc. You end up spending more time doing this than actually working out.
So before you set foot in the gym, plan your workout. What body part will you be training today? What machines will you use, how many rep, how many sets per each. This is why you see a lot of people in the gym with notebooks - they have it all planned out and it really helps make your workout more effective!
Lift smart and light to begin with
Ego can consume us. We all want to step foot in the gym, lift the heaviest weight and walk out like a boss. It doesn’t work like that! If you’re new to the weights area, lift light! Get the technique correct first, do your research, watch youtube videos on how to perform the exercise then relay that in the gym. It’s more important to get the technique correct, once that’s nailed you can start lifting heavier.
We have access to so much fitness information around us, on social media, youtube and even in magazines. If you’re not sure what weights to lift, what exercise to perform then research it. Bodybuilding.com was very helpful for me starting out. It gives you a list of workouts depending on what muscle you are targeting, along with pictures/videos on how to complete the exercise and what weights to use etc.
No one is looking at you
This ones important. No one is watching you lift! People who lift weights are too busy checking their own technique rather than care about what you’re doing. I worried about this one so much, i used to think people were judging my technique... they weren’t at all! They probably didn’t even notice i was there. It’s all in your head, turn up your music, get in there and try it!
The one thing i find by going to more and more weight lifting gyms is the ‘big scary looking body builders’ are some of the NICEST people i’ve ever met!! Remember, they was in your shoes once upon a time.
If you need a spot, if you’re not sure how to do something just ask someone the people there are so helpful. A lot of them have helped me with my form, gave me new workout ideas and i’ve even made some friends through it!
Have some confidence, chuck your hair in a pineapple, blast your music and get in there! Because trust me once you go in the weights area... you’ll never go back. It’s my second home now!
